The current transfer window in Europe’s top leagues has not yet closed, but there have already been many high-profile and expensive transfers. Of this multitude, we have selected the most high-profile ones. In our opinion. And below we have arranged them more by resonance than by cost.
This table certainly is not final, because there are still many interesting transfers to come, as we will inform you regularly.
10. Andreas CHRISTENSEN, Chelsea/Franc KESSIER, AC Milan vs Barcelona. Free agents
«Chelsea, which began a new era after the departure of the odious Russian oligarch Abramovich from the club, has let go its two leading centerbacks without much regret. One of them – Christensen – to Barcelona. Despite the fact that Andreas is a pupil of the London club, he did not want to stay at Stamford Bridge. And rejected the new, improved proposal «Aristocrats». And all because at the hands of the Dane was already an agreement with Barcelona, which has promised him a place in the basis.
The situation with Kessier in this case is very similar. The Ivorian did not renew his contract with the newly crowned Italian champions simply because he had a verbal agreement with the Blaugranas. Both Christensen and Kessier have the same amount of compensation for the new club – half a billion euros.
9. Antonio Rüdiger, Chelsea vs Real Madrid. Free agent
Another Chelsea centre-back (already former) who was let go by the London club without regret. That was because the German continually rocked the boat – first demanding a salary increase, then clashed with Tuchel, then asked to let him go. As a result, Antonio ended up at the Santiago Bernabeu. And for the sake of the transition to Real Madrid Rüdiger went to a significant reduction in his salary. Therefore, the main reason for this transfer was not money.
8. Darwin Nunes, Benfica vs Liverpool. 75 mln euros
«It didn’t take long for the Merseysiders to grieve after Mane’s departure. Benfica forward Nunez was quickly brought to Anfield. The Uruguayan forward finally convinced Klopp after scoring two goals – one at home and one away – against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final. All in all, Darwin’s statistics last season were terrific – 34 goals in 41 games. Interestingly, Nunez could become the most expensive player in Liverpool’s history. If the Merseysiders pay Benfica all the bonuses for the transfer of the 22-year-old player, the final amount will be one hundred million euros. It is telling that the Eagles acquired Nunez two years ago for 39 million.
7. Kelvin PHILLIPS, Leeds vs Manchester City. 50 million euros
«My dream has come true,» was the reaction of the former Leeds prop after joining Pep Guardiola’s team. At ManCity, Kelvin will play as number four. The contract is for six years. Phillips was brought to the Etihad to replace veteran Fernandinho, who left the club and returned to Brazil. As part of the Phillips deal, ManCity midfielder Jaby, 18, moved to Leeds.
6. Aurélien TCHUAMENI, Monaco vs Real Madrid 80 million euros
It was clear two years ago that the Monegasques would not retain their star player. The only question was how much money Monaco could get for another «diamond. It turned out to be quite a lot. Interestingly, last season the «price tag» for Tchouameni was much lower – «only» 30 million. During the season the French national team player went up almost three times. Liverpool also claimed for Aurélien, but Real proved more convincing.
5. Gabriel JESUS, Manchester City vs Arsenal. 50m euros
Jesus was very much expected by ManCity. Gabriel played for Guardiola’s side since 2016 and won every possible APL title with them. But he failed to achieve his full potential. And after Holland arrived at the Etihad, it became clear that, at best, Jesus would have problems with playing practice. So the Brazilian decided to restart his career at Arsenal. The contract is signed until 2027.
4. Ryan Gravenberch, Ajax vs Bayern. 25 million euros
It was already known at the beginning of last season that the Amsterdam club would not retain their leading midfield player. For the burly 20-year-old midfielder lined up a real queue of top clubs. Manchester United were keen to sign Gravenberch, especially after the Red Devils were managed by former Ajax coach ten Hague. However, the English were beaten by Bayern, who reached an agreement with both the player and his club late last year. The contract is designed until 2027. In addition to a solid «fee», the Amsterdams will receive from Bayern seven percent in the case of further resale Gravenberch.
3. Romelu LUKAKU, Chelsea vs Inter. Lease
The Belgian ram forward is like that Figaro: here and there. After helping Inter win the coveted league title the season before last, Romelu returned to his former club. To try to enter the same water twice. It seemed at first that Lukaku would cope with this difficult task: his performance was high. But then came the setback, the injury, the disagreement with Tuchel. And nostalgia for Milan and Italy. Rom has repeated more than once that he would like to return to Inter. The new Chelsea bosses did not want to keep the Belgian. So far, he is on loan for next season, but without the right to buy.
2. Sadio Mane, Liverpool vs. 40 million euros
According to the Senegalese winger/forward, he reached his ceiling at Liverpool. He could no longer give Klopp’s team more. Sadio wanted a new challenge. And the transition to Bayern became such a challenge for him. It seems likely that this transfer took place very quickly due to the fact that the Munich team’s main striker – Lewandowski – will certainly change his place in the current transfer window. The contract with Mane is valid through the summer of 2025. Liverpool FC will receive 32 million euros and a further eight million euros as bonuses under the terms of the contract between the clubs.
Erling HAALAND, Borussia D-Manchester City. 75 million euros
The most billing and most expected transfer as of now. But interestingly enough, it took place without any hype and red tape. Apparently, the sides reached an agreement back in winter. The deal was formalized in early May, before the transfer window opened. Erling turned down Real Madrid and Barcelona for a move to Guardiola’s team. In his new job, the Norwegian talent will receive 350,000 pounds per week. Interestingly, Holand’s agents and representatives received about 50 million euros for the transfer to City. Erling’s move to the Etihad was insisted on by Guardiola personally. The forward should be the last argument for the Catalan to win the Champions League.
